Today, we shall talk about the bosses who are the ‘Leading’ type: means they assume the leadership role as it should be done. The debate about managers and leaders notwithstanding, these bosses manage and lead the team.

Leading bosses, often characterized by their positive orientation, strong leadership qualities, and principled work ethic, contribute to creating a positive and effective work environment. Here are the key attributes, and behaviors displayed by this group of bosses.

Positive Outlook – Leading bosses typically maintain a positive and optimistic outlook, even in challenging situations. They inspire and motivate their team members through their own positive demeanor. Positivity does not just mean keeping a sunshine view, it means to extend all necessary support whenever required.

Visionary Leadership – These bosses have a clear vision for the future and inspire others with their strategic thinking. They communicate a compelling vision that aligns with organizational goals. Vision comes from the top; it cannot be built bottom up. Vision is a timeless view of future, and leaders translate it into practical step to achieve that vision.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence – Leading bosses demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence and empathy. Emotional intelligence starts from self-awareness and then moves to social awareness. These bosses are aware of their own self, and they understand the emotions of their team members, building a supportive and inclusive workplace.

Effective Communication – Communication is usually a strength for leading bosses. They communicate clearly, listen actively, and encourage open dialogue within the team. An inclusive and congenial work environment cannot be evolved without open communication. Leading bosses understand the importance of communication and make conscious efforts for it.

Collaborative Approach – Leading bosses value collaboration and teamwork. They actively seek input from team members, recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives in achieving success. They recognize that individual work is important but collaborative work takes teams to excellence. In my personal observation, all major companies have become big due to sustained team effort over many years.

Adaptability – Leading bosses are adaptable and open to change. They navigate uncertainties with resilience and guide their team through transitions effectively. Since COVID19 pandemic, adaptability has become critically important due to what is popularly called VUCA – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Only people with the ability to adapt shall survive.

Integrity and Ethics – Integrity is a cornerstone of their leadership style. Leading bosses prioritize ethical behavior, setting a strong example for their team to follow. Integrity is limited to financial matters; integrity means standing firm on commitments and principles.

Investment in Employee Development – They recognize the importance of employee growth and development. Leading bosses provide mentorship, training, and opportunities for skill enhancement. It has always been the hallmark of good bosses that they would always ensure that development of their team members does not stop.

Recognition and Appreciation – Leading bosses acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of their team. They celebrate achievements and provide positive reinforcement, creating a culture of recognition. Studies show that recognition and appreciation are bigger motivators than money; money has its own place and importance. Effect of recognition lasts much longer and motivates more deeply.

Decision-Making with Consideration – Decisions are made with careful consideration of their impact on the team and organization. Leading bosses involve the team in decision-making when appropriate. Participative management leads to collaborative work environment.

Inspiring Leadership – Leading bosses inspire and motivate their team members to achieve their best potential. They set high standards while providing the support needed for success. Their own presence, work ethic, and style is an inspiration.

Delegation and Empowerment – Delegating responsibilities and empowering team members are common practices. Leading bosses trust their team and provide them with autonomy to excel in their roles. Delegation has been proven to be most effective in developing people.

Conflict Resolution – They address conflicts in a constructive manner, promoting open communication and finding resolutions that benefit the entire team.

Continuous Learning – Leading bosses are committed to continuous learning and personal development. They encourage a culture of learning within the team. They also arrange resources for continuous learning.

Strategic Planning – Strategic thinking is evident in their approach to planning and decision-making. They balance short-term goals with a long-term vision for sustainable success.

Working with the Leading Bosses

Align with the Vision – Understand and align yourself with the vision and values set by the leading boss. Share in their enthusiasm for achieving shared goals. When a team succeeds, every team member succeeds. This is the mantra you must know and practice.

Contribute Actively – Actively contribute to team discussions, providing your input and ideas. Leading bosses appreciate team members who actively participate and share their perspectives. You will learn more in this manner.

Seek Feedback – Request feedback on your performance and seek guidance on areas for improvement. Leading bosses are typically approachable and willing to provide constructive feedback. You must take up your personal development as a goal and work under guidance to achieve this.

Demonstrate Initiative – Take initiative in your role and showcase your commitment to the team’s success. Leading bosses appreciate employees who go above and beyond. If you had ever worked with a different type of boss who discouraged initiative, you may find it difficult in the beginning, but once you get the hang of the things, you would enjoy.

Communicate Effectively – Maintain open and transparent communication with your leading boss. Keep them informed of your progress, challenges, and successes. Share all relevant information, and if you are taking a problem to them, suggest some solution also.

Embrace Learning Opportunities – Take advantage of learning and development opportunities provided by the leading boss. This demonstrates your commitment to personal and professional growth.

Collaborate with Colleagues – Build collaboration with your colleagues. Leading bosses value teamwork, so building positive relationships with your peers is important. It is also essential for teamwork.

Learn and Use Positive Behaviors – Learn the positive behaviors of your leading boss, such as maintaining a positive attitude, practicing empathy, and acting with integrity, practice these often, and add these to your own work ethic.

Working under a leading boss provides an opportunity for personal and professional growth, as they often create an environment that nurtures success and development. By actively participating, aligning with the vision, and demonstrating a commitment to shared values, you can thrive under the leadership of a leading-type boss.

Leading type of bosses have become rather rare in Pakistan. If you have the good fortune of working with this type of boss, make sure you make the most of it.

Concluded.
